Who should I speak to if I am worried about my child?

Class teachers

Firstly, please speak to your child’s class teacher (make an appointment at the office). Most children with SEND will learn well and make progress within their mainstream class. Your child’s teacher is responsible for adapting their teaching to meet your child’s needs. If they feel your child needs any extra help, they will speak to a SENCo and let you know. Your child will have a termly Learning Plan with targets and this will be shared with you each term. Link to staff list

SENCo (Special Education Need Coordinator)

If you need extra support, please contact a member of the SEND Team. They will coordinate support, make sure Learning Plans are kept up-to-date and monitor your child’s progress. They may occasionally suggest extra support through interventions (these are often small group activities in school). They will liaise with people outside of school for support when it is needed. If your child has an EHC Plan, the SENCos will be responsible for the Annual Reviews.

SLT (School Leadership Team)

You can also speak to a member of SLT. The Head Teacher is responsible for all aspects of the school, including children with SEND. The SEND Governor is responsible for making sure that we have the right provisions and adaptations and that children with SEND receive the right support.

Outside support

There may be occasions when the SENCo will arrange for experts from outside the school to come in to offer support and you will usually be invited to meet with them.

How could my child get help in school?

How will we identify your child’s needs?

We will seek to identify your child’s needs through assessments, measuring progress and monitoring behaviour. Support will be offered as needed. There are four areas of need identified in the SEN Code of Practice :

  • Communication and Interaction
  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

The support given will depend on the type and severity of need. Most children can be helped within their classrooms by their class teachers and support staff.

What types of support are available?

Class teachers have high expectations for every child and expect to see progress from the child’s starting point. They will teach in a range of styles to suit their needs. They may use more practical resources to support understanding. Staff have ongoing training and support from the SENCos. Planning is regularly monitored to ensure that the needs of children with SEND are met. Special equipment is provided when necessary. Children may work in small groups run by school staff to target areas they are finding difficult. Children may receive specialist support set up by people outside of school, such as Speech and Language therapy. If your child has a higher level of need, we may consider asking for an assessment for an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP). This would involve a number of meetings and making sure that your child always gets the support they need.

How will I communicate with the school?

If you are concerned about your child’s progress, firstly, speak to the class teacher or contact them through Class Dojo. If you feel your concerns are not being managed, please speak to the SENCo. You can also speak to the Head Teacher or the SEND Governor. You can make appointments through the school office.

Your child’s progress will be assessed regularly. You will be invited to termly parent’s evenings and will receive an annual report. If school has concerns about progress, your child is likely to have a Learning Plan. This will be shared with you each term. At other times, you may receive a phone call from a member of SLT or the SENCo or you may be invited into school.

We can offer support to parents too. Please speak to the SENCo or contact our Parent Support Team. Links to Roost etc
Is there support when my child moves on?

We support children as they move to a new class each year. We liaise with secondary schools and pass on information. Where possible, children are invited to visit their new schools in the summer term.
